Wolfspeed Silicon Carbide Is Pushing Electric Vehicles Ahead Of The Curve

The Advanced Automotive Tech Forum will examine the fast-changing landscape in the automotive market for electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles. In the last year, the evolution towards electric vehicles accelerated faster than anticipated. Autonomous driving technology has already been pushed from a short-term priority to a long-term goal, but the race to be first with AVs remains fierce. Meanwhile, there seems to be a shift in priorities from driver-assist technologies toward driver monitoring systems. The Advanced Automotive Tech Forum will offer keynotes, panel discussions, technical presentations and tutorials on the latest automotive design trends, including the multi-prong effort to develop power efficient, advanced EVs with automated features.

At Wolfspeed, we’ve expanded our portfolio of wide bandgap Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices to deliver high-voltage, high-current, and high-temperature components that are helping designers build the competitive and efficient EVs that the market demands. Visit the Wolfspeed virtual booth to learn more and join the forum for the latest trends in electric vehicle development.

Driving towards a greener future with Silicon Carbide
John Palmour, Chief Technology Officer
Keynote Presentation: March 9th at 8:40 am EST

The rapid adoption of Silicon Carbide for drive train inverters in Battery Electric Vehicles is changing the market landscape. Silicon Carbide inverters offer a 5-10% improvement in efficiency, resulting in either extended range or a reduction in battery size, and lower system costs. While it takes more energy to grow Silicon Carbide than Silicon, that extra energy is returned multifold in the application, with an impressive 13x energy saved on energy invested (ESOI) for an 800 V bus. This gives a path to further reductions in the Carbon footprint of the OEM. These benefits are driving a large number of OEMs to design Silicon Carbide into their systems, but concerns remain around assurance of supply. To address these supply concerns Wolfspeed is expanding our capacity. Today’s Silicon Carbide power device manufacturing is largely based on 150 mm substrates, allowing cost reduction over recent years. As the market continues to accelerate, the push to 200 mm substrates is inevitable to further cost reductions and increase supply. Wolfspeed is in the final stages of building the world’s first, largest, and only 200mm Silicon Carbide factory in upstate New York.

Technical Presentation: March 10th at 9:05 am EST

If you’re looking to design fast and efficient EV DC chargers or power blocks for charger stations, Wolfspeed has a solution for you. This presentation will analyze the main power topologies, system architectures and Silicon Carbide (SiC) power devices for highest efficiency, maximum power density and lowest system cost within the fast DC charging design space. In addition approaches in harnessing and processing the energy to charge from renewable sources and storing that energy – from “Sun to Wheel”. All this power can be converted more efficiently with Wolfspeed Silicon Carbide (SiC) providing less system losses and delivering higher efficiency.
